Drunk Driving If you have watched any amount of television in your life, there is a good chance that you have seen a public service announcement (PSA) regarding the dangers and legal penalties associated with drunk driving. Despite the fact that thousands of these messages have been produced over the years, a non-profit agency led by the founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has found a way put a new spin on a drunk driving PSA, according to a story published by NBC News.

Bar patrons at a private party in Los Angeles were greeted by Kris Caudilla, wearing a prison uniform, when looking in a mirror above a sink in the restroom. After introducing himself, Caudilla explains that he is speaking to them from prison because he is serving a 15-year sentence for DUI manslaughter after killing a police officer while driving drunk after a night out. Caudilla’s statements were filmed in advance and then played on cue, giving the impression that a conversation was taking place. The interactions were filmed and produced into a spot entitled “Reflections from Inside,” which has been viewed in the U.S. on social media more than 35 million times since it was published on April 8th.

DWI Arrests are Not Always Legitimate

No one will argue with the content of this PSA, and even the most aggressive DWI defense attorney would not claim that drunk driving laws are without merit. Unfortunately, the fact that drunk driving is such a serious public health issue can result in over-aggressive enforcement that has the potential to result in innocent people being accused of DWI when they were not actually drunk. For this reason, it is critical for anyone accused of DWI to speak with an attorney as soon as possible. There are several reasons that a false DWI arrest could occur, including the following:

  • A medical condition that mimics the signs of alcohol intoxication
  • An improperly calibrated Breathalyzer device
  • Errors on the part of law enforcement
  • Inadequate training of law enforcement
